Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE, read eye-triple-e) is a world wide organisation with the purpose of advancing technology and innovation. The organisation currently has about 425 000 members, mostly citizens of the United States, and is the largest organisation of professionals such as engineers and scientists in the world. By means of research and education, IEEE is focused on the advancement in the fields of electrical, electronic, communications and computer engineering. This is done by creating a platform for knowledge such as publishing scientific journals and organising conferences: every researcher knows the IEEEXplore database and global IEEE conferences. Also, a great virtue of IEEE is the standardisation of the industry to funnel developments: when computer scientists talk about 'IEEE 802.3' they actually mean ethernet which is an IEEE standard. Many members, mostly professional engineers, are a IEEE member to remain updated on the latest technologies and advancements in their field.

IEEE Student Branch Gent

The IEEE Student Branch of Ghent has the purpose of representing IEEE at Ghent University. We unite students with an interest in electronic, electrical, mechanical or computer engineering. We offer a pleasant program which includes both technical-scientific and cultural-social activities. We have a mission to teach students about new technologies. Some activities which seem less educational (such as tastings) have the purpose of bringing students together for interdisciplinary networking.

On August 18th, 1989 the IEEE Student Branch Gent was founded by students of the Werkgroep Electronica-board. In 2000 there was no longer a leading committee so the Student Branch became inactive. However, since 2006 a new team of active branch officers was found to bring the IEEE Student Branch Gent back to life. The student branch has made an evolution in being led by doctoral researchers to a student driven association and is growing year after year.

Although IEEE is a professional organisation, about 100 000 of the IEEE members are student members. Engineering students use IEEE to get a feel of the professional engineering field and learn more about advancing technology. To get students in touch with IEEE, every mayor university has an IEEE Student Branch. Led by students or researchers, a student branch organises activities fit for students with a general purpose: learn more about technology, get a taste of the engineering profession, train professional skills outside the university environment, indulge in research, help getting a job, create a platform for their research publication, challenge them by competitions or... just organise enjoyable activities.

A lot of our activities take place in the lab of building 913 in Technologiepark, Zwijnaarde. We will make sure the presence of IEEE Student Branch Gent is clear!

WELEK

WELEK stands for Workshop Electronics. The goal of WELEK is to give students interested in electronics some hands-on experience through soldering evenings and competitions. Students can learn how to solder electronics, analyse a circuit and program microcontrollers. This is not only for beginners, experienced electronics lovers are also more than welcome. These more experienced people can get material and help for some more advanced projects. This way they can enlarge their electronics hobby. WELEK yearly organises the robot competition. Students can build and program their own robot which they can use to compete against each other.

WELEK is run by its own separate board of doctoral researchers. Supported by the IEEE Student Branch Gent they can reach the students of Ghent University. Check out the WELEK page dedicated to all the activities.
